Hailing from Minneapolis, Heavy for the Hawk is a six-piece band with members originating from New Jersey, Maine and here in Minnesota. Their collective musical interests run deep, and as such they bring a dynamic mix of music to their shows. You’ll hear anything from Indie Folk/Alt/Rock, Oldies, and Americana to moving renditions of Soul and R&B. Many of the band mates write their own music, so you’ll likely hear some originals as well. Heavy for the Hawk is always looking to include songs that are laid to the wayside by mainstream radio. They love dusting off nostalgic favorites that you’ve maybe forgotten about, and also mixing in some music from today’s talented songwriters too, making it a show anyone can enjoy. Featuring harmonies from their two vocalists (who happen to be a duo out in the real world too), they aim to bring the listener along with them as they move through songs. Come to a show, and you just might discover some new music to soothe your soul!

Tapers notes: I debated whether or not to post this show because of mixed results, but ultimately decided to because the first set turned out ok, and the band is really good, so I feel they deserved to be heard. That being said, this recording has a lot of warts in the second set. I was trying the omni caps on my mics for the first time just to compare against the cardiod ones, and I regretted it as soon as I listened back to the recording. The first set was actually pretty decent (the first minute has low sound as one of the speakers there wasn't working), but during the set break a group of 3 people decided to sit down right behind me and proceed to talk throughout the rest of the show. Omni's being what they are, it picked up all of it as well as the show. Definitely a learning experience, and I've put the omni's away at this point. Also, lots of noise from kids throughout the show, it felt like parents had just showed up with their kids and let them run wild for 3 hours. Also, you'll hear a harmonica in the second set for a song or two...this was not part of the band, someone in the crowd had brought one along and was playing. The guy was clearly smashed before the show even began, so I can't say I was surprised. All that being said, the band was great, my first time seeing them, and I look forward to seeing them in the future under better circumstances.
